At a time when superhero movies were starting to take off its amazing that Warner Bros. let Zack Snyder make exactly the sort of Watchmen movie that he wanted. To have a grim, dirty comic book film like Watchmen released without being toned down or neutered is a rare thing indeed. Once X-Men, Spider-Man and the MCU grabbed the box office, the idea of an R-rated superhero movie took a definite back seat as young audiences and families put tons of cash into the studios. Films like Dredd and Deadpool are carving out a small, violent niche in cinemas now, but R-rated comic fare was still few and far between in 2009, with only the heavily stylised Sin City really flying the flag four years prior. Watchmen hit just a year after Iron Man surpassed expectations and The Dark Knight proved that superheroes could be, well, dark without alienating the kids, Yet here was a film that featured breaking bones, nudity, flamethrowers being used on soldiers and a man having both of his arms removed with a circular saw. Popcorn fodder it aint. Its no surprise then that Watchmen never spawned a franchise or made tons of money for the studio, but then it wouldnt have been Watchmen if it had. As Rorshcach says, never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon.
