Watchmen is a film with more to say than the entire output of the MCU and DCEU put together, and that depth is more deceptive and surprising onscreen when you consider the films it was released alongside. The fact the plot is nigh-on identical to the classic books tale of paranoia and war certainly helps, but that doesn't detract from its intelligence. Even Nolans Batman films dont have the same impact for newcomers that Watchmen is capable of. The Dark Knight Trilogy may be a consummately crafted tale, a great study of drive and obsession, but they only exist as a study of one man; theyll probably always be the best Batman stories onscreen but they say nothing about the world. Likewise Man Of Steel and even the original Superman and Batman films are fairly simple romps at heart, and the less said about Catwoman and Green Lantern the better. For all it didnt pull in the same numbers as DCs mainstays, Watchmen is a film with enough integrity and intrigue to make it a more interesting viewing proposition for a lot of people, even without prior knowledge of the source material. Its dark, its clever, its surprising and it completely lives up to the legacy of Alan Moores opus. Are you a fan of Watchmen? Or did Zack Snyder mess it up more than Superman?
