7 Things Movies Always Get Wrong About College

6. Sexual Hijinks And Sexual Harassment Are Two Different Things

Remember that classic scene in Animal House where Bluto is spying on a sorority dorm while the girls inexplicably engage in a semi-nude pillow fight? Or how about when Pinto nearly has sex with an unconscious 13-year-old? Or when, during their triumphant courtroom speech, Otter admits that they "took a few liberties with their female guests"?

It's all played for laughs, of course, and the scenes themselves are pretty funny, if not downright hilarious, especially when you're a horny teenager.

But they're also pretty despicable when you stop to think about the implications for even a second. Voyeurism is not only a felony in some places, it's also an extreme invasion of privacy. Groping a 13-year-old as a college student, even when it's consensual, is still statutory rape. And just what the f*** could ever be okay about "taking liberties with female guests"?!

Even if these exact situations are toned down in modern college movies, the underlying message remains the same: Sexual harassment and even sexual assault are fine as long as they're done as innocent hijinks.

It's telling that Rolling Stone magazine was already declaring "the fall" of the real life Alpha Delta fraternity at Dartmouth - the same one depicted in Animal House - back in 1992, describing how the infamous frat had been slow to change with the times, even in light of gang rape cover-up.
