7 Times David Lynch Confused The Hell Out Of Us

4. Rabbits

It's difficult to imagine what a David Lynch sitcom might look like, but Rabbits is it. However, this is no Friends and the jokes in Rabbits are as unfathomable as the plot itself.

This nine episode web-series focuses on one room and three humanoid rabbits. The scenes are played out with mostly non sequitur dialogue between the three, with hints that at least one of them is hiding a terrible secret. There's an occasional demonic presence that appears too, and all of this madness is accompanied by an entirely inappropriate sitcom-style laugh track and applause track (the male rabbit often entering the room to whoops and cheering, à la Kramer's Seinfeld entrances).

Even for the most hardened of Lynch fans, Rabbits is a perplexing mystery. The feeling of dis-jointed mayhem is exacerbated by Lynch's use of a single camera setup. There's no cutting away from this surrealistic bunny nightmare, as the viewer is locked into it for the duration. And while it's undoubtedly hypnotic, Rabbits is one of Lynch's most deliberately obtuse pieces of work to date.
