7 Unnecessarily Complicated Movie Plots That Had Simple Solutions

4. Avatar (2009)

avatar12The Complicated Plot:In the year 2154, humans have used up almost all of Earth's natural resources, so the RDA (Resources Development Administration) have started to mine for a valuable mineral alled unobtanium on a moon called Pandora, which is inhabited by tall blue alien people called Na'vi. Because Pandora is poisonous to humans, the RDA develop an "Avatar" program, which allows humans to pilot Na'vi-like hybrids, so they can explore the moon and interact with the locals. Eventually the story of Pocahontas unravels itself, and Jake, a human, falls in love with a Na'vi lady. The RDA aren't happy with any of this, and wage war on the moon, creating death and explosions. The Incredibly Simple Solution: What, really, is the point of the Avatar program? The RDA's one true goal is to mine and gain unobtanium, right? Getting involved with the locals seems relatively dangerous and ultimately illogical, given that there's no way they're going to accept the human race's reasons for visiting Pandora as anything but wholly terrifying. Which is to say, the RDA were far better off just wiping the planet out from afar - if unobtanium has to be mined out from the planet's core anyway, well... no harm done. I'm not, of course, condoning this kind behavior: I'm simply saying that, from a government/RDA perspective, the Avatar program makes little sense when they're willing to just murder everyone for what they want anyway. It's us or them, right? So, uh, blow up the the Na'vi from the safety of space, guys.
