7 Upcoming Films Destined For Controversy
6. Backseat
The last two and a half years or so have been a political hellscape. Divisive rhetoric, lines between patriotism and outright nationalism blurring more day by day, and the dawning reality of the powers-that-be dictating free thought permeate the everyday political dialectic. One of the most controversial figures of US politics in the last twenty-years, former Vice President Dick Cheney, arguably helped foster this culture of division.
Director Adam McKay will tackle Cheney's political career in his upcoming film, Backseat. Though he will undoubtedly utilize the darkly satirical touch that made his previous film, The Big Short, so powerful, McKay's latest might just strike too close a nerve with audiences. Perhaps some will take umbrage with "immortalizing" Cheney through a biopic, those from right-leaning sides of the spectrum may demonize the highly critical look McKay will almost definitely take at Cheney as well as the Bush Administration at large.
With as skilled a director and as talented a cast as Backseat boasts, the potential is high for it to be one of the best movies of the year. Don't expect it to be an easy pill to swallow, however.
