7 Ways Deadpool 2 Sets Up Future Sequels

Putting the X Force into DMX... Force...

It’s only just been released, and we’re ready for more. David Leitch’s sequel to 2016’s star comic book sass machine, Deadpool, has certifiably proved that lightning can strike twice.

With razor sharp jokes, sneaky cameos, and a whole lot of the unfiltered highland spring water that is Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 capitalises on all the things that made the first film great. Catapulting the franchise to new heights with its self-aware hilarity, it’s only fair that we’re psyched for the next instalment - in whatever form it may come.

So what about Deadpool 3 then? It’s apparently been in the works since the original 2016 release, with Fox hoping to turn their favourite anti-hero into a bona-fide threequel. The set up that's come from the most recent film hints to a whole world of X-Men and Deadpool crossovers, as well as opening up the franchise to a world of possibilities with a nifty little time-travelling device - of which we're shown the sheer ridiculousness of in one of the best end credits scenes Marvel has ever produced.

With the modern X-Men series armed with a slew of releases and Deadpool 2 smashing its previous 2016 records, there's plenty to speculate on what could come next...

7. Deadpool 3 Denial

Right, now hold your breath - there seems to already be a hurdle to clamber over with the next Deadpool standalone, with comments circulating about the viability of the franchise. Whilst it’s likely the Fox team could and hopefully will squeeze a third movie out of the tried and tested formula, it doesn’t necessarily mean they should: and that’s according to Mr. Deadpool himself.

Reynolds stated in an interview with EW: “I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don’t… I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that.”

It’s true that the previous two movies have put Wade Wilson through the ringer, where he’s been broken down - both figuratively and quite literally - to be put back together bigger and badder by the end of the film. And whilst that recipe might be a little overdone in terms of number three, that doesn’t mean there isn’t other options for a third movie to explore.

Thankfully, the writers agree - and after the next X-movies are out the way, they're sure to be back for some singular Deadpool goodness. You can let out that breath now.
