8 Alternative Awards For 2016's Movies
3. Sequel Nobody Wanted - Independence Day: Resurgence
Independence Day: Resurgence is an example of another of 2016’s trends – a needless sequel to a movie that wasn’t that great to begin with. Barely a month slipped by without the likes of Ride Along 2, Now You See Me 2, Ouija: Origin of Evil or Mechanic: Resurrection seeing release.
Following two flops (Anonymous and White House Down) Roland Emmerich goes back to his biggest hit and produces another movie that wants to have it both ways, attempting to stun the viewer with huge effects sequences and corny drama while also being flippant and superficial. So while the aliens are laying waste to another city, Jeff Goldblum quips about how they like to destroy landmarks et cetera.
It’s apt that Goldblum returns because it shows how much worse The Lost World: Jurassic Park could’ve been if Spielberg had waited two decades to go back to the well, then treated the original film with an awe and reverence it doesn’t really deserve.
