8 Alternative Awards For 2016's Movies
1. Best Donald Trump Joke - Grimsby
You have to give Sacha Baron Cohen his due: nobody gave Donald Trump a harder time in 2016, including Hillary Clinton and Saturday Night Live. While Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of the President elect was indeed hilarious, it pales alongside a movie where Trump is “accidentally” infected with AIDS.
Playing a slob who discovers that his long lost brother (Mark Strong) is a crack MI6 agent, Baron Cohen ends up attempting to thwart a plot to release a virus in Santiago, where England are gearing up to defeat Germany in the World Cup (yeah, right). When Baron Cohen’s gun accidentally goes off, the bullet hits AIDS patient Daniel Radcliffe (don’t ask), whose blood then infects Trump.
It’s the kind of take-no-prisoners attitude you’d expect from the creator Borat and Bruno, only this time there’s an actual plot. It also brings Baron Cohen full circle: when Borat arrived in New York in 2006, the first thing he did was take a dump outside the Trump Tower.
For anyone disappointed by Grimsby - and judging by its lackluster reviews, that's quite a few of you - take heart. Baron Cohen now has his work cut out attempting to satirize a reality TV star turned President who declares war on his enemies via Twitter.
