8 Arthouse Filmmakers You Didn’t Notice Released Films In 2016

7. Emir Kusturica - On The Milky Road

Kusturica is possibly the filmmaker who has translated gypsy culture to the big screen with the greater success (he’s one of the few directors who have won the Palme d’Or twice, thanks to When Father Was Away on Business and the famous/infamous Underground) and sumptuosity.

Driven by musical energy (he is also a musician), his feature films usually display unprecedented bursts of slapstick humour and joyful naughtiness in politically convoluted contexts, establishing important commentary without making it a burden.

On the Milky Road is his first feature film since 2007 Promise Me This. It is based on his own segment incorporated to the 2014 anthology Words With Gods, and competed for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
