8 Awesome Disney Fan Theories You Won't Believe
6. Aladdin Is Set In The Distant Future
After being notorious for rather straight and logical story (anthropomorphic fox Robin Hood aside) Aladdin marked a rather distinct change of pace for Disney. The Princess and mystical land were present and correct, but the humour was rather different, relying heavily on pop culture references and the comic stylings of Robin Williams. The endless references to culture that was relevant in the late eighties poses a rather glaring plot hole, however; how does Genie know all this stuff?
A quick explanation is that, being an incredibly mystical being, Genie transcends the usual passage of time. But this theory's a lot cooler.
When first meeting Aladdin, Genie comments that his clothes are "much too third century", while in the same scene states he's been trapped in the lamp for ten thousand years. Taking both those things literally, then clearly the film must be set in the year 10,300 or later. It accounts for the knowledge of modern culture and makes Agrabah a paradise in a post-apocalypse landscape.
