2. The Lion King

The Lion King Opening
Disney

The greatest animated film of all time with an enduring love from new generations to this day. Trading Danish nobles for members of the animal kingdom, The Lion King is an adaptation of Hamlet and works incredibly well as a coming of age tale for a young lion cub named Simba.

With one of the best voice casts of all time including fantastic work from Rowan Atkinson, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Whoopi Goldberg, there are two in particular worthy of praise.

The iconic tones of James Earl Jones' voice as Mufasa are so incomparable that he was asked to reprise his role in the 2019 remake. Jeremy Irons who plays the villainous usurper Scar is such a phenomenal antagonist that his voicework here is still the most well known performance for the Oscar winning actor.

With an incredible soundtrack composed by Elton John and brilliant characters that are developed and well realised, The Lion King is the most accessibly enjoyable Shakespeare adaptation there is.
