8 Bizarre Conspiracy Theories About Popular Actors
7. Tom Cruise Held Scientology-Fuelled Wife Auditions
Ah, Scientology you'd be hilarious if you weren't so frequently terrifying. For those fortunate enough not to have heard, Scientology is a collection of beliefs and practices (often referred to as a cult) created by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. You'd think the fact it was cooked up by a fiction writer would set off a few alarm bells, but nope. One of its most prominent members is actor Tom Cruise. While many of the theories on this list are absurd and unlikely, this one treads a different line. It certainly wouldn't be the strangest thing of which Scientology has been accused. In a book written by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Lawrence Wright titled Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood And The Prison Belief, Cruise is accused of initiating secret auditions for a new wife, following his divorce from Penelope Cruz. According to Going Clear, actresses including Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba were all invited to audition for a non-existent part in the Mission: Impossible series. Upon arrival, Cruise would observe the actresses not with the intention of hiring them, but so that he could select his next romantic partner, who was then coerced by Scientology into dating him.
