8 Bizarre Conspiracy Theories About Popular Actors
4. Marisa Tomei's Oscar Was A Mistake
In 1992, Marisa Tomei bagged the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny. Since then she's appeared in a bunch of other famous movies too, including The Wrestler, The Lincoln Lawyer and Crazy, Stupid, Love. The thing is...Tomei was never supposed to win. At least, that's the case according to quite a substantial number of theorists, who believe announcer Jack Palance was unable to pronounce the actual winner's name and simply announced Tomei as the winner, owing to the fact her name had recently appeared on the TelePrompter. Apparently the rumour started after an anonymous former son-in-law of an Academy Award winner began to spread it around Hollywood. There's also the fact that actor Jack Palance was at the time known for his increasingly eccentric behaviour. It also didn't help that Tomei was relatively unknown when compared to her Oscar rivals, including Vanessa Redgrave in Howards End and Judy David in Husbands And Wives. Though the rumour has been denied multiple times (even by the Academy itself), it nevertheless persists, even though Tomei has been vocal about how much it upsets her.
