The big news at the box office this past weekend was the surprisingly low-key U.S. opening for Alice Through The Looking Glass. The follow-up to 2010’s billion-dollar hit Alice In Wonderland managed just $35 million over the four-day weekend Stateside for a current global gross of $105 million.

Obviously ‘flop’ is a relative term in this instance, but there can be little doubt that Disney were hoping for a lot more from the Alice sequel, which will struggle to make much of a return on its $170 million budget. For Disney, however, it will likely be but a blip in a year that’s already proven remarkable and isn’t nearly done yet.

Another sequel (slash prequel) to underperform in May was The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which opened between the middle and end of April and has grossed $161 million to date. While not a disaster for Universal, it’s a far cry from the take of Snow White And The Huntsman, which finished its run four years ago with a global take of almost $400 million.

Meanwhile, Shane Black’s The Nice Guys has only managed around $28 million against a reported $50 million budget; a pity for a fine film and all concerned.

I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
