1. Machete Cortez - Grindhouse
Given the lacklustre box office haul of his two big screen outings, it seems audiences haven't connected with Danny Trejo's machete wielding anti hero. My guess is people weren't sold on the idea of two purposely schlocky film based off a mock trailer that came in between two lacklustre movies. Maybe people would have cared more if they'd known Grindhouse wasn't the first appearance of the unimaginatively named Machete. His trailer in the Tarantino-Rodriguez misfire is actually one of the coolest crossover cameos Ive ever come across; Machete started out life as the Q figure in the Spy Kids franchise. And this isnt a similar character or an example of Trejos lack of versatility. The characters share the exact same name in both series, meaning that what started out as a joke has turned Spy Kids into the most violent kids franchise ever. This one toes the line a little bit between cameo and all out spin off, but given the generally pastiche nature of the whole Grindhouse project, Machete more than deserves the top spot. You know what the really brilliant thing is? Even after Machete became the star of his own films, Trejo still went back to being the gadget man for the fourth Spy Kids movie.
