8 Characters Who Need Bigger Roles In Star Wars: Episode VIII
7. R2-D2
More than almost any character returning from the original films, R2-D2 got the biggest shaft. Not only did he just lifelessly sit around for nearly the whole movie, he was replaced by an upgraded, more fun model in BB-8. Everyone understandably fell in love with this new droid but surely they can’t just leave ol' Artoo out in the cold.
If only for the nostalgia factor, it would be nice for R2 to be active for more than a few seconds in the next film. BB-8 can still be the main droid, but R2 is a classic and the series seems pretty intent on honouring its roots.
Now that he’s woken up, it does feel like R2-D2 is destined for a more visible role going forward. Especially since he's now been paired up with Rey and, by extension, Luke, instead of being confined to the Resistance base. He doesn't necessarily need more time on screen, he just needs to actually participate in the action a little more.
A more important role for R2-D2 won’t make or break Episode VIII, but it’s the kind of little touch that many fans would appreciate.
