8 Classic Problems With Batman And Superman Movies Warner Bros. Are Repeating With The DCEU
1. Thinking Superman's Boring
On the face of it, Superman is boring. He’s
the righteous hero with a generic set of powers who flies about in his
underwear while saving cats from trees and whacking on a pair of thick-rimmed
glasses for disguise. At least that’s what his uninformed detractors think.
And, it seems, Warner Bros.
Despite Supes actually being one of the most weighty, nuanced comic book characters out there - perhaps not quite as wholly removed as Quentin Tarantino thinks, Clark Kent is a relatable ideal with the weight of multiple worlds on his shoulders – the studio just can’t seem to accept him on his own terms and repeatedly dismiss his appeal outside of being a legacy IP.
This soured the Reeve films, led to the string of
non-starter projects in the early-noughties, influenced Returns being a
throwback (people liked Supes then, so rinse and repeat) and why he had such restricted time in
Batman V Superman, a film where he’s in the title. It's also why
they’ve been so obsessed with The Death Of Superman – killing a hero is
immediately interesting, so they just bee-line for that, missing that there's seventy-five years of mythology elsewhere.
It’s crazy that, in a time when you can get movies based on Deadpool and Guardians Of The Galaxy that freaking Superman isn’t treated with reverence, and that's far and away the big thing Warner need to sort out.
