8 Directors Who Hate Superhero Movies

5. William Friedkin

Best known for The French Connection and The Exorcist, William Friedkin is no stranger to commenting on popcorn movies, having previously likened Star Wars’ massive success to the franchising of McDonalds. “The taste for good food just disappeared,” he said. “Everything has gone back towards a big sucking hole.”

At the Champs Elysees Film Festival in Paris 2015, the filmmaker kept on the offensive, informing the audience that modern cinema “is all about Batman, Superman, Iron Man, Avengers….all kinds of stuff that I have no interest in seeing at all.”

He added: “Films used to be rooted in gravity. They used to be about things.”

Don’t bother asking if he’s seen any of the current crop of superhero movies – he won’t even sit through the sequels to The Exorcist. “I’ve seen none of them, nor do I want to or intend to.”
