8 Essential Coen Brothers Films You Must Watch

5. Barton Fink

No Country For Old Men 1280x720
20th Century Fox

Barton Fink may not be one of the most recognizable films in the Coens' filmography, but it is easily one of the best. And one of the weirdest.

The film is difficult to describe without giving too much away. The story concerns a struggling New York City playwright, his insurance salesman neighbor, and the general slave-like conditions of the entertainment industry as a whole. But, as is the case with every Coen brothers film, there is far more to Barton Fink than meets the eye.

In studying the film, scholars have struggled to define Barton Fink's genre, and it has been described as a black comedy, a drama, a horror, and much more. In truth, all of that makes sense since the script was written in one of the darkest periods of the Coens' career.

Do not let any of that dissuade you, however - Barton Fink is a fantastic and strange film that only this talented pair of brothers could produce.
