8 Even More Star Wars Questions That Always Confused You
6. How Did Palpatine Choose Anakin's Sith Name? - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith
While George Lucas may have landed on the name "Darth Vader" after taking the Dutch word for "father" and opting for a word that wasn't that far away from "dark", it's never really explained on-screen why Darth Sidious randomly decided to eventually use this iconic title when renaming 'The Chosen One' in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.
(You know, other than it sounding both ridiculously cool and utterly terrifying as far as new Sith handles go.)
But that random pause you see during Episode III when big bad Palps is moments away from giving Anakin Skywalker the name of Vader actually contained the answers you've been searching for.
In fact, according to the film's novelisation, written by Matthew Stover, Sidious actually took a brief moment to ask the dark side of the Force to guide him in the naming of his new apprentice.
And after receiving an answer "dark as the gap between galaxies", Skywalker was soon given the moniker of Vader before being sent to wipe out some younglings in the Jedi Temple.
This particular novelisation may fall into the Legends continuity, but with there being no other Canon explanation behind why Sidious took one look at his new apprentice and thought "Ah yes, Dark Father", this creepy Force chat is as close to a definitive answer as Star Wars fans are probably going to get.
