8. How Do Hancock & Mary Fight When Being Together Causes Them To Lose Their Powers? - Hancock (2008)
The Plot Twist:Hancock garned a mixed reception from audiences and critics alike, because that's what happens when you make an average, disappointing movie that bogs down its entire plot with a strange and illogical twist. What could have been a neat deconstruction of superhero tropes emerged as a bizarre, muddled genre mash-up. The movie itself concerns Hancock, an invincible, drunk, half-assed superhero (the last of his kind), who teams up with a PR guy named Ray who wants to rebuild Hancock's image so that the public might learn to embrace him in a newfound light. Hancock later learns that Ray's wife, Mary, is
also an invincible God-type being, that they are destined to be a pair, and that they lose their powers if they're together.
But, Uh... Before this twist is revealed, Hancock and Mary get into a massive fight downtown, where they cause major damage whilst hurling objects and whacking the hell out of one another. It is not a good day for the Los Angeles taxpayer, to say the least. How do they somehow manage to show so much strength when we later learn that their being in the same room means they're open to taking serious amounts of damage (i.e. getting shot)? I mean, if their powers are draining
that fast, there's no way that they could have had the battle that they do in this movie with defying the established logic (though there isn't much established logic in this movie, to be fair).
