8 Filmmakers Who RUINED Their Movies By Explaining Them
6. Darren Aronofsky - Mother!
mother! isn't exactly the most intricate film ever made. Its creation story metaphor is very on the nose and the overall lack of subtlety is probably why the film ended its theatrical run with only a good, not great, critical consensus.
And still, despite the film's perceived lack of subtlety, Aronofsky felt compelled to spell out its themes in interviews after its release. The creation metaphor, which character represented who in the Garden of Eden, all was explained by the director and lead Jennifer Lawrence in the immediate wake of the film's release, which perhaps intimates that - in their eyes - it somehow didn't do a good enough job of communicating that element in the first place.
Wherever you stand on mother!, having a director or actor come out and literally spell out the exact meaning and message of a film that's just released seems a little overboard. Just let the film speak for itself, or at the very least cool on the shelf for a little while. Retrospective discussion can then come in, but while audiences are heading into theatres and those first reactions emerge, it's much better to let the film breathe.
