8 Filmmakers Who Were Pissed Off By Movie Critics

7. David Ayer Responds To A Suicide Squad Twitter Attack

While most movies exit the conversation once their theatrical windows have wrapped up, big studio tentpoles tend to stick around, being debated and discussed by fans for weeks, months, and even years after their initial debuts.

Pretty much anything out of Marvel and DC will fall into this camp, including 2016's Suicide Squad. With a messy production and a divisive reaction, it's one of those movies that is argued about to this day, and in September 2019, the film's director - David Ayer - entered this discourse after being provoked by a foul-mouthed movie critic.

The critic in question was David Ehrlich of IndieWire, who tweeted that Suicide Squad was a "dumb piece of sh*t" that was hated by every sane person on Earth. Clearly very annoyed, Ayer fired back, calling Ehrlich's attack "painful", and accusing him of being overly negative in order to attract attention.

Ehrlich then apologised and the two sides shook hands (virtually), with Ayer pointing out that the final version of Suicide Squad was far from the vision he originally had in mind. #ReleaseTheAyerCut.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
