8 Great Characters DC Movies Have Completely Screwed Up

7. Steel

The next time you see a list of the all-time worst comic book movies, if Steel isn't mentioned, there's something wrong. Starring Shaquille O'Neal of all people as a weapons designer with a penchant for creating hi-tech gadgets, this was one of those adaptations which borrowed pretty much only the name and appearance from the source material and clearly hoped that sticking "SHAQ" on the poster would make it a guaranteed hit. It wasn't, and handled this character very poorly. Don't get me wrong, Steel is far from an A-List superhero, but he is an important part of the Superman mythos after first emerging on the scene following the Death of Superman storyline. Doing away with the hero's primary source of inspiration turned Steel into just another generic action hero, but he was neither remotely interesting nor even just a little bit fun to watch in action. The comic book version of Steel is a smart guy too, but this one? He was a buffoon! Constantly hounded by the cops, Steel can't even stop a bank robbery and later gets arrested at his grandmother's house! Sure, things went his way in the end, but if felt like luck, and the guy in the cheap looking cosplay armour you see above was in no way the Steel who has emerged as something of a fan-favourite hero in recent years.
