8 Great Directors Who Have Made More Bad Movies Than Good

3. Brian De Palma

briandepalma600The Good: Obsession, Carrie, Scarface, The Fury, Blow Out, The Untouchables, Casualties of War, Carlito's WayThe Bad: Wise Guys, Bonfire of the Vanities, Raising Cain, Snake Eyes, Mission To Mars, Femme Fatale, The Black Dahlia, Redacted, Passion Give Brian De Palma a good script and he'll make you an efficient, Hitchcock-inspired movie, crafted with visual splendor and a perfect eye for detail, and hey, there's a good chance that it might also out to be something of a masterpiece, too. But make sure you're one hundred percent about that script, because De Palma wouldn't know a good screenplay if it hit him in the face. That's to say, the man has agreed to shoot a hell of a lot of bad movies. Yes, he was the man behind the camera for Carrie, Scarface and The Untouchables, but I don't know what the heck was going on when he made Mission to Mars or The Black Dahlia. In the same vein as Ridley Scott, this guy can make a hell of a movie if he's given the right material, but he doesn't have any grasp on whether or not a script should be made into a product that costs $50 million dollars or set fire to and thrown out of a window.
