8 Great Movies Told By Liars
5. 300
Zack Snyder's homage to chiselled abs and topless men isn't the sort of movie that you'd associate with an unreliable narrator, but when you dig down into the reasoning behind the movie and its fantastic tale of heroism - it makes sense that we're being duped by a grade A liar. If the drawn on six packs didn't give it away, then Dilios's voiceover definitely does.
Essentially, the story of a small Spartan force banding together to take down the overwhelming Persian army is a tale of fantasy, constructed by the solider sent home in a ploy to inspire the rest of Greece into fighting for their freedom. Without Dilios, the 300's efforts would be useless - they need a storyteller to weave a tale of epic proportions to make their suicide mission a tale of honour, rather than arrogance.
That the film takes a historical standpoint but litters it with fantastical creatures and scenarios, transforming a real life battle into one that functions as Spartan propaganda instead. Dilios knows what he's doing with his world of oracles and immortals, which explains the unique art style of the movie in turn as well. This is a film for legends, not for reality.
