8 Great Sci-Fi Movies With Only One Main Character (Most Of The Time)
1. Under The Skin (2013)
Jonathan Glazer's otherworldly Under the Skin stars Scarlett Johansson as a mysterious and seductive alien being, touring the bleak streets of Glasgow and preying upon the city's male population.
The action unfolds slowly using dreamlike imagery, lingering shots and improvised dialogue to keep Johansson's nature, identity and actions (including the fate of her victims) unknown and ambiguous throughout.
Despite the ambiguity, Johansson's performance is stunningly precise. Her movements, expressions and interactions with her unwitting victims are disarmingly charming yet become more and more unnerving as the story progresses.
The film's thoughtful pacing and unusual imagery will appeal to fans of visual poetry from the likes Andrei Tarkovsky but for those who prefer a more traditional approach, it could be a bit of a slog. Regardless, Under the Skin is still essential viewing for fans of modern science fiction.
