3. Rain Man

As if pre-empting this very list, it turns out that Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man religiously eats pancakes on a Tuesday as part of his strict weekly regime.

The film was already good enough without the added pancake endorsement, but the touch is a wonderful one, particularly when it is revealed that Raymond chooses to eat his pancakes not with a knife and fork, but with cocktail sticks. A challenge that all pancake fans should really take on this Shrove Tuesday.

Not only does the scene feature pancakes, and an unusual ingestion method, it's also the first time we fully see the developing dynamic between Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman's characters. We learn something of the extent of Ray's condition, and also how Charlie really feels about his brother, as well as his financial motivations, hardly painting Charlie well.
