7. Predestination
The Spierig Brother's science fiction drama is a whole load of weird. Featuring Ethan Hawke as a temporal agent sent back in time to stop a criminal dubbed 'The Fizzle Bomber' from killing thousands of people, it feels strange to start out with the simple story of a man retelling his life to Hawke pretending to be a bartender. At least, until all the sh*t hits the fan in spectacular fashion.
After having Hawke having his face blown off and reconstructed in the future, his mission becomes all the more personal, and this man at his bar is far more important than just a storytelling session.
It turns out that whilst he has an unbelievable past, in no uncertain terms - he has an unbelievable future, too. Whilst Hawke's interest in this character is something best left unspoiled, the timeline jumps, perfect circles, and temporal conundrums are both entertaining to watch and fascinating to dissect, resulting in a movie that's got far more to it than it advertises.
