8 Inspirational Sports Documentaries That Could Change Your Life

3. Last Chance U

Last Chance U
Netflix

Year: 2016

Director: Greg Whiteley

Like the Oscar-winner Unbreakable, Netflix's exceptional Last Chance U focuses on high-school football, offering it as a focal point to then draw out the personal stories that really make it stand out. Its genius lies in the fact that it is gripping whether you love football or not - an uncomfortably truthful tale of striving for redemption against seemingly surmountable odds that suggests football is both everything and not the only thing at the same time.

It tells the story of every victory and every loss - not just on the field of play but also in the classroom and in the players' occasionally fraught personal lives, where race, class and attitude have a major say on the lives and fate of those in focus. And it establishes heroes in those who try to help, with whom you feel every slight victory even more ferociously.

If it's not the best sports documentary series ever, it's close.
