3. The Blob

A weird 50s science fiction movie about an amorphous blob on the hunt for digesting wandering humans can't have any basis in reality, right?

Wrong.

Whilst a space-faring alien hungry for flesh might be exaggerating the whole ordeal a bit, there actually WAS a blob that came from the sky. Discovered by patrolling police officers in 1950, they saw what appeared to be a parachute fall down and went to the landing site to investigate. What met them was a purple jelly six feet across filled with strange crystals, that was emitting a weird mist, sparkling and bioluminescent as they moved their flashlights over it.

Despite their discovery being a pulsating mass that had fallen from the sky, and one that they all believed to be a living organism, one of the officers had the bright idea to stick his hand into the substance to see what it was all about. It broke apart and quickly evaporated off his hand leaving behind an 'odourless scum'.

The blob itself disappeared within 30 minutes before anyone important could come and look at it, rending the story a joke in newspapers across the country. Of course, the whole thing then inspired a producer to put the mysterious lump on the big screen, and The Blob was born.
