8 Little Known Nuances In Tom Hardy’s Performance That Made Nolan’s Bane Awesome
6. He Already Had Much Of The Bulk (Unlike Bale)
Christian Bale changes weight about as often as Patrick Bateman changes overalls. Before Batman Begins he did The Machinist, a role that had his ribs on show throughout, and after The Dark Knight he crashed to get his Oscar for the equally slight turn as Dicky in The Fighter, before once again putting on the pounds for his last turn as Batman.
Between roles he added/took away as much as 100 pounds (45 kilograms). And you'd imagine Tom Hardy, while not coming off as such a slight performance, would have to make a similar body change. Well you'd be wrong. All he had to put on was 30 pounds (13 kilograms); an impressive amount of course, but pretty standard when building up muscle.
And one of the key elements of Bane's character is just how unbelievably built he was. It's a doubled edged sword of facts really; it's a small amount of weight to add given the mass of muscle, suggesting Hardy was both already well built (check out his build in Inception), and highlights just how crazy the lengths Bale goes to are.
