8 Little Known Sacrifices Christian Bale Made To Make Nolan’s Batman Awesome
3. He Lost His Voice Multiple Times
Is there anything more distinctive about Christian Bale's Batman than the voice? Mocked to various levels by fans, it's representative of the films' consistently serious tone, although often the jokes are aimed in the wrong direction.
Many commented on how the voice got deeper in the years between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but that was more Nolan's decision, with the director deepening Bale's delivery in post-production. Even though some of the growling is a digital creation though, that didn't stop Bale losing his voice multiple times through the films' productions, showing a ridiculous commitment to the gruffness (which, let's not forget, was the actor's idea). In light of the digital tinkering, however, it seems a needless sacrifice; all part of Bale's insane commitment.
Interestingly, the criticisms could have been tempered to some degree (not completely - people love to nitpick) if some focus had been put on a new element of the Batsuit deleted from the films; just below the cowl are what's meant to be microphone-speakers, in-universe explanations of how Bruce can keep himself loud without going hoarse like his actor.
