8 Little Known Sacrifices Christian Bale Made To Make Nolan’s Batman Awesome

5. He Changed His Body Shape (Too Much)

Warner Bros. Pictures

Everyone knows Christian Bale has made a habit of completely redefining his body shape for roles. In the space of five years he €went from Dark Knight bulk to junkie malnourishment for The Fighter, then back to Batman before putting on a more belly focused bulk for American Hustle.

But no switch is more impressive than that he initially made for Batman Begins. Coming off The Machinist, with his permanently on-show ribs having made even the fittest viewer feel overweight, he had a quick turnaround to give him the heft necessary to save Gotham. Unfazed, Bale put on the muscle, only to arrive on set to (friendly) jeers of €˜Fatman€™; in an unbelievable turn of events he€™d managed to put on too much weight. And thus in the lesser known side to his body changing ordeal, he had to quickly lose a chunk of weight before the film started shooting.

Even though you expect getting in shape to that level to be a gruelling physical test, that'€™s extreme.
