Home and Away is an Australian soap opera which began its run in 1988. Taking place in fictional coastal town of Summer Bay and focusing on the personal lives of the town's many residents, the soap has so far aired close to 8000 episodes and has - like all soap operas - seen many characters come and go and come back again.

With a large cast and an epic scope typical of the genre, fans have had the pleasure of watching many big named stars before they were famous, when acting on the soap was a great way to open the doors to bigger and more exciting projects.

The following list will take a look at some of the show's biggest stars, all of whom got their start in Summer Bay and are now internationally recognised as some of the world's biggest stars, be them TV actors or the leads in major movie franchises. Some of the following actors weren't around for long, but Home and Away acts as a clear stepping stone in their career, whilst others ended up starring in the show for a surprisingly long time.

Whatever the case, here are eight massive stars who got their start on Home and Away.

8. Julian McMahon

Julian McMahon portrayed Ben Lucini between 1990 and 1991, starring in an impressive one hundred and forty-five episodes.

Ben was an army corporal who was originally from Italy, and upon arriving in Summer Bay he met Carly Morris (Sharyn Hodgson) and fell in love. Despite some hiccups, the pair eventually got married only for Ben to leave after revealing he was AWOL from the army rather than being discharged as he led Carly to believe.

He and Carly managed to make it work, but McMahon left the show following the revelation.

Following his departure, McMahon received a lead role in the crime drama Profiler (1996-2000) and later starred as supervillain Doctor Doom in the original Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel (2007). He also starred as Cole Turner in the supernatural drama Charmed between 2000 and 2005, and found his most acclaimed role in the medical drama Nip/Tuck (2003-2010), for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Most recently, he has landed the starring role in the crime drama FBI: Most Wanted and had a supporting role in Marvel's Runaways (2017-2018).

Not bad for a guy who ducked out of the army.
