8 More Movie Fan Theories Confirmed By The Creators

4. It Takes Place In A Post-Human Apocalypse - Cars

The Theory: The Cars franchise may be one of Pixar's lesser properties, but that hasn't stopped fans theorising about the series' peculiar absence of humans on Earth. It's especially baffling as the world still has plenty of recognisable hallmarks of human activity, namely monuments that had to be built by somebody, right?

A popular theory over the years has suggested that the Cars films take place in a post-human dystopia of sorts, where the cars have effectively killed off humanity in order to become the dominant species on the planet. Creepy, huh?

The Confirmation: The creative director of the franchise, Jay Ward, was asked last year about the lack of humans in the movies and cannily replied, "Imagine in the near-future when the cars keep getting smarter and smarter and after one day they just go, 'Why do we need human beings anymore? They’re just slowing us down. It’s just extra weight, let’s get rid of them.' But the car takes on the personality of the last person who drove it."

Though Ward reiterated that this was merely his own explanation, considering he's the brainchild of the series, there's no reason not to take it as fact. You'll never watch Cars the same way again.
