8 Most Egregious Snubs Of The 2016 Oscar Nominations

5. Idris Elba - Beasts Of No Nation

You almost have to feel sorry for Netflix, after everything they went through to make sure this movie was actually eligible for the Oscars. Although they've made a name for themselves with their original programming for shows, their film department is still relatively young and untested. So when they made Beasts of No Nation, the harrowing tale of a child soldier, they wanted this to serve as an example of what Netflix could do in the film arena. Of course, the Academy Awards require that every film has to have at least a limited release in New York and LA to be eligible, which is understandably an issue for Netflix, which has made its mark through screening media. So Netflix released Beasts of No Nation in a small number of theaters, not actually thinking that a lot of people would go to the theaters to see this movie when they could watch it from the comfort of their own homes, just so that it would be eligible come award season. Whatever way you shake it, they were clearly expecting some Oscar attention. And to be fair, they probably should have. Idris Elba turns in a powerful and terrifying performance as the Commandant who takes a sinister interest in Agu, the young star of the film. Unfortunately, he was overlooked, and Beasts Of No Nation left the Oscar nomination announcements empty-handed.
