8 Most Egregious Snubs Of The 2016 Oscar Nominations

2. Ridley Scott - The Martian

Ridley Scott is a tremendously creative and imaginative director, but his films so rarely cross over into the territory of the type of films that the Academy likes to reward. Interestingly enough, despite the fact that he has three Best Director nominations to his name, they're not the films that you probably think they are. You know, the movies he's made that are indisputable classics, like Blade Runner or Alien? Not a single nomination. His three noms are actually for Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Dawn, and Gladiator. Go figure. But anyway, The Martian seemed like it had hope, because it was Ridley Scott's first film in a while that was well-received and mainstream enough for the milquetoast tastes of the Academy, while still staying true to his science fiction roots. The movie itself got its share of Oscar love, but for some absurd reason Ridley Scott was left off the short list for Best Director. This surprised both pundits, who had been touting as a second or third place contender for the award, as well as mainstream audiences, who may not have been on board with the Globes considering The Martian a comedy, but all liked it well enough to hope for its success as the Oscars. But seriously, how does Ridley Scott not have an Oscar by this point?
