8 Most Horrifying Practical Film Effects (And How They Were Achieved)

1. The Lawnmower Scene - Braindead

The Movie: Ever wonder why the orcs in The Lord Of The Rings are so damn disgusting? It's because Peter Jackson spent two decades before that making splatter movies. Braindead might be one of many, but it's easily the bloodiest (and most insane).

The Effect: Everyone fantasises about what weapon they'd use against a horde of murderous zombies. In Braindead, Lionel Cosgrove uses a lawnmower. How They Did It: Fake blood €“ gallons of the stuff. The most striking thing about this scene is the seemingly endless amount of blood that shoots out of, well... everything. From severed limbs to severed heads to minced bodies, the whole sequence is red from beginning to end. Around five gallons of fake blood were pumped onto the set per second, drenching the main cast and zombie extras and creating the effect of an endless shower of crimson. Common belief is that Braindead is actually the bloodiest film of all time, at least when measuring the sheer amount that was used over the course of production. Aside from all the fake blood, the rest of the scene is mostly extras in make-up alongside a bunch prosthetic limbs that the crew were able to toss on set in order to create the impression they were flying off mutilated corpses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC1d7dw24Gg What's your favourite practical effect?
