8 Most Hotly Anticipated 2016 Films (And Why They'll Be Disappointing)

7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

What It Is: Rogue One is the first Star Wars spin-off since Disney purchased the property in 2012 for four billion dollars. It tells the story of a band of Rebel fighters who steal the plans for the Empire's Death Star. Why It'll Be Disappointing: Forgetting for a moment that awful title (yeah, it really is called Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) it's a film that nobody is asking for. Sure, it's probably piqued the interest of a few Star Wars fans now that it's been announced and there's nothing you can do but accept it, but really? Really? Rogue One will be disappointing for multiple reasons. For a start, it's directly interfering with the legacy of the original trilogy. Star Wars: The Force Awakens received a lot of criticism for its blatant reuse of the plot of A New Hope, but it just about manages to get away with it because of all of the new stuff it brings to the table. There are new places, characters and planets, and that's not to mention the fact that though the story was similar, it was never guaranteed to end the same way €“ for all viewers knew, it could have paved a completely new path, which kept up the tension and suspense. Rogue One, on the other hand, won't have the space to bring much new. It's completely governed by details established in the original trilogy, and if it fails to adhere to those, fans will be enraged. There can't be any suspense, either, as we know going in that the Rebels succeed. On top of that, Rogue One is the beginning of the worrying reality of Disney owning Star Wars €“ film after film, year after year, watering the property down into just another franchise.
