2. Colonel Dax - Paths Of Glory (1957)
This haunting World War I set film stars Douglas as Colonel Dax, a French army officer who defies his superiors by refusing to carry out a suicidal attack. Douglas plays a masterful performance as Dax defends his men in a court martial against charges of cowardice.
The film begins in the trenches of France in 1916, showcasing the horrific conditions and atrocities experienced by the soldiers. Smash cut a luxurious château, and General Broulard asks his subordinate General Mireau to capture a heavily fortified German position. Knowing it would be a suicide mission, Miraeu is reluctant, but Broulad persuades him with the promise of a promotion. The attack, led by Colonel Dax, is a disaster. Refusing to accept the blame, Mireau decides to court martial a hundred of his men with cowardice.
The film is Douglas’ first collaboration with legendary director Stanley Kubric, and is noted for its intriguing mix of courtroom drama and strong anti-war sentiments. The film did not perform well at the box office, however it has since become regarded as one of the great anti-war films.
