7. Florence Foster Jenkins

Florence Foster Jenkins is one of those movies that comes out first in the UK, gets mild attention before slinking away, only for it to explode when it hits Stateside. However, unlike recent cases such as Kingsman or Ex Machina, this one doesn’t really deserve much of the praise.

Everyone involved in this idealised telling of a vaguely-remembered, terrible wannabe Opera singer feels like they’re on autopilot. Stephen Frears has the accessible cross-generation drama shtick down and refuses to change it, The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg plays an introverted pianist with as a high-pitched giggler, Hugh Grant is good, but still in his road house, and, worst of all, Meryl Streep does a (for her) very pedestrian performance that, outside of some funny screeching, doesn’t really wow, yet will still 100% get an Oscar nomination.

The biggest problem is that the film can’t decide on its focus. Should we be laughing at this deluded crooner or feeling sorry for her delusion? The script tries a bit of both, and the result is just a clash.
