Sausage Party would have been a perfect Funny Or Die sketch. With a twenty minute runtime and a lean focus on the foodstuff’s discovery of humanity’s true intentions leading to a brief flirtation with the idea’s religious allegory before ending with the food orgy, it could have been a viral hit that achieved the pitch’s intrinsic goal – make a Pixar movie full of sex and drugs and more sex – without any harm.

Unfortunately, that’s not really a viable business option, and so it had to be a proper cinema release and the concept was stretched and padded out, reducing it to another Point Grey stoner comedy. The good stuff’s still there, it’s just more buried than it could have been, and the overall message is weakened as a result.

It’s a disappointment in that regard, although many, especially on the critic side of things, seemed to be able to get by on the constant silliness, which is odd given that there was really nothing more than what was in the advertising.
