8 Most Underrated Movies From Summer 2016
4. Money Monster
Where Money Monster fails is in thinking it's smarter than it is. It's really a Friday Night Movie, the sort of film you can watch after a couple of beers and have a grand old time. However, Jodie Foster clearly fell into the trap of thinking because it was tackling a major current event - bankers are evil - this was somehow a higher-level dissection of an industry. Wall Street with terrorists.
It's not, but it's still a fun movie that uses a contemporary backdrop to tell an engaging, multi-layered story. The highlights come early on, when Jack O'Connell takes George Clooney hostage on the set of his Wall Street "insider" show, amping up the tension as Julia Roberts director fights to keep control.
Perhaps it's the curse of releasing a big, semi-dumb movie at Cannes. Money Monster opened in the middle of the 2016 festival, possibly the worst place for it to be taken as is; alongside high art and pretentious cack that wishes it was New Wave this is painfully commercial. The reviews were predictably mixed and set the tone for what was to come. Once it hits DVD, get a few mates round, crack open a couple of cans and you'll have a grand old time.
