8 Movie Characters Who Foreshadowed Their Own Deaths

If used effectively, foreshadowing can greatly enhance your enjoyment of movies you've already seen.

Sure, you might already know who dies and what the massive plot twist is going to be, but if you can spot all the clues leading up to these moments, it feels rewarding - like the movie is a giant treasure hunt and you just hit the jackpot.

Foreshadowing in movies is actually quite common, and you've probably had several major instances come to mind already - nobody talking to Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense, Nick Frost outlining the entire plot at the start of Shaun Of The Dead - but something that's a lot rarer is for a character to foreshadow their own death with a simple line of dialogue.

Upon first watch, a lot of these moments just seem like throwaway lines and they're often easy to forget, but during a rewatch - when you know what's coming and the hints become clearer - they can become extremely noticeable.

So while these characters may have unwittingly possessed the ability to predict the future, ultimately, that did not save them.

8. Grace Augustine (Avatar)

James Cameron's Avatar was not afraid to kill off its main characters, and this lent the film an element of unpredictability, which helped compensate for the simplistic and slightly formulaic nature of its core story.

Killing off Sigourney Weaver's Grace Augustine was a genuinely surprising move - especially considering the long history shared between the actress and her director - but a quick line much earlier in the film actually hinted at her death way before it happened.

Throughout Avatar, Grace is absolutely fascinated by the blue-skinned Na'vi and their wildly different culture: she's on Pandora to study and learn, as opposed to the military, who are there to shoot stuff.

At one point, she states "I'd die to get a sample" while talking about the Tree Of Souls, a willow-esque point of spiritual importance to the Na'vi. And later on - after taking a bullet - she's moved to this tree to be healed, but succumbs to her wound and dies.

So while she never did get a sample, the closest she ever came to retrieving one was when she was on death's door.
