8 Movie Mistakes Acknowledged As Canon

6. Captain Barbossa's First Name - Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End

Though even the most casual Pirates of the Caribbean fan will likely remember that Captain Barbossa's (Geoffrey Rush) first name is Hector, you might not be aware that this wasn't actually officially revealed until the third film, At World's End.

And even then, it was really a happy accident, after Johnny Depp recorded a DVD commentary track for the original film and jokingly declared that Hector was indeed Barbossa's name.

Hilariously, fans ended up treated Depp's off-hand comment as gospel online, and so the writers basically felt duty-bound to commit it to canon, as they finally did in At World's End when Jack Sparrow (Depp) greets Barbossa as Hector for the first time.

Depp may have been joking, but c'mon - it's a perfect fit for the character.
