4. 13 Hours

With a worldwide gross of $69 million, 13 Hours is the biggest flop of Michael Bay’s career and if you didn’t catch it theaters you really should seek it out on Netflix. It’s arguably Bay’s best movie since The Rock.

Working from a script by Chuck Hogan, Bay retells the true story of an attack on a US compound in Libya, but if the prospect of the director of Pearl Harbor tackling a recent incident fills you with dread, fear not. Bay foregoes his usual over the top visuals and instead delivers an exciting, coherent thriller that boils down to a good old fashioned siege movie, with the heroes trapped and surrounded by a faceless enemy.

At 144 minutes, you wouldn’t exactly call it economical but it’s the first film in years from this director that eschews overextended, repetitive action sequences where it feels like time is standing still. In short, 13 Hours is as good an action movie as you’ll get from Bay at this point in his career. Transformers: The Last Knight opens in June.
