8 Movies That Failed Because They Didn't Kill The Main Character

2. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

RIP: Han Solo

Yes, technically, Han Solo isn't the main character of the Star Wars films. However, he makes up a third of the trilogy's headlining trio, so he deserves a slot on this list. Harrison Ford himself suggested that Han bite the dust in Return of the Jedi, but Lucas was against it because of the negative effect it would have on toy sales. Yep. Lucas sacrificed his integrity and good storytelling so that he could sell more toys. Surely that's not something he would do again... But, I digress.

Han's death would have shaken fans and had a tremendous effect on ROTJ. The film is good, don't get me wrong, but lacks the emotional impact that Empire Strikes Back had, and the ending feels a bit too sappy. Plus, Han's death may not have had that great of an impact on toy sales. He's still an iconic, heroic, and all-around awesome character, and if his death had been pulled off in an incredible, moving fashion (maybe a self-sacrifice to save the galaxy?), people may have even felt more attached to him.

But don't worry. Maybe Han will meet his end in 2015 when we finally get to see Episode VII. I guess only time will tell.
