The filming of Apocalypse Now took its toll on almost everyone concerned, with lead actor Martin Sheen even having a bit of a breakdown over the course of production, but once again it was local wildlife that paid the highest price of all.

Some of the film's most iconic shots show the devastating power of napalm as huge swathes of forest burn to the ground. Well, none of that was faked. Filming took place in the Phillippines, where enormous amounts of petrol were poured all over the trees and then set ablaze. Flaming tyres had also been scattered around the area to provide additional smoke and canisters were dropped from above to give the impression that it really was a napalm attack.

The film's director, Francis Ford Coppola, knew what he was doing was wrong, saying it wouldn't have been allowed in the U.S due to environmental issues, but he wanted his napalm shots and was willing to do whatever it took to get them.
